CBT Presents Awards for Academic Excellence

CORNELIA, GEORGIA  – Each year, since 1988, Community Bank & Trust has presented the H. M. Stewart Award of Excellence to the Valedictorians or top honor graduates of four area high schools and colleges. This prestigious award, named in memory of H. Milton Stewart, Sr., a long-time member of the bank’s board of directors, was created by the bank’s senior management to recognize in some tangible way Mr. Stewart’s dedication to superior, quality education in northeast Georgia.

When he died in June of 1988, Mr. Stewart left a legacy of unparalleled service to the citizens in the communities his company served. In 1983 Mr. Stewart was named to the National Independent Telephone Pioneer Association’s Hall of Fame. He served on a number of corporate boards of directors including Community Bank & Trust. He was a dedicated business and civic leader and served as a fine example for us all.

Community Bank & Trust has a long history of support for education in every market it serves. Whether through financial literacy initiatives, academic excellence programs, partners in education, or athletic booster clubs, the bank remains committed to the same high ideals for quality educational programming. As examples, bank staff and officers are involved in parent-teacher organizations, in mentoring programs, and booster clubs. Bill Loyd, senior vice president of Community Bank & Trust, currently serves as chairman of the Habersham County Programs for Academic Excellence.

Mr. Loyd, and other senior executives of the bank, recently presented the 2010 H. M. Stewart Awards of Excellence to the top honor graduates of Habersham Central High School, Tallulah Falls School, Piedmont College, and Truett-McConnell College. This is the 22nd year Community Bank & Trust has recognized top academic achievement at area schools and colleges.

Community Bank & Trust has been 'banking the customer's way' in North Georgia for 110 years.  With locations in 10 North Georgia counties, Community Bank & Trust is a division of SCBT, N.A., a subsidiary of SCBT Financial Corporation, which was named in Forbes as one of the 100 Most Trustworthy Companies in America in 2009.  SCBT Financial Corporation has assets of approximately $3.7 billion and its stock is traded under the symbol SCBT in the NASDAQ Global Select Market.
